Dan Gipple

— Co-Founder, CEO

Dan is a former AT&T International marketing and sales executive and a former board director of three of the UK’s top 5 Direct marketing/advertising agencies. In 1996 he co-founded a leading UK eBusiness consulting and production company, New Marketing Technologies Ltd. (which was sold to Concept AG/Ogilvy Interactive in 2000) and in 2003, he launched Acclaria Ltd., an accelerated business growth consulting practice. In 2007, Dan co-founded Carbon River with the goal of developing faster, more cost effective and accurate methods for carbon, GHG and environmental impact accounting. This led to CarbonRiverTM’s excellence in Hybrid LCA and the carbon neutral shopping‚ services embodied in CR’s consumer behaviour change programmes.Dan was a keynote speaker at the 2009 UN DNA Nigeria National Climate Change Day in Abuja, Nigeria. He is also a co-founder of Waste to Wonder International (a firm that transforms corporate waste into turnkey infrastructure for schools in developing countries), is a trustee of the New Hope Trust (a Christian social housing trust based in Reading) and a trustee of LiberiaLink, a charity that supports delivery of Liberian education and self-sustaining livelihoods across Liberia.

Dr. Sangwon Suh

— Director, Chief Scientist and Consultant

Recognised internationally as a leading LCA authority, and the original author of the Integrated hybrid method, Sangwon consults to governments, protocols and multinationals around the world. He is also the creator CarbonRiver’s internationally acclaimed foundational dataset, the Comprehensive Environmental Data Archive (CEDA). Sangwon is renowned as a top expert on the computational aspects of life cycle assessment, and he uniquely straddles, and is a key contributor to, both WRI/WBCSD and ISO steering groups (ISO TC207 SC5: ISO 14067, WRI/WBCSD GHG protocol), the most prominent international standardization and protocol-setting organisations. He also sits on the UNEP and is serving as co-editor of the world’s leading process LCI database, Ecoinvent. Sangwon’s formal roles include:

  • United Nations Environmental Programme‚ (UNEP) International Panel for Sustainable Resource Management, member.
  • World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) + World Resources Institute (WRI): Member, Working Group for GHG Protocol.
  • SETAC: Member liaison to ISO standardisation activity on carbon footprinting.
  • Chair-elect, Gordon Research Conference for Industrial Ecology Councilor, International Society for Industrial Ecology
  • Part of the Walmart Working group
  • Co-Editor, Ecoinvent database

Dan Girdler

— Co-Founder, Director

Dan co-founded CarbonRiver in order to address the urgent need for a more comprehensive and scalable approach to carbon accounting. It was critical for Dan that such a solution must deliver both real commercial value to clients and analytical output of the highest integrity. Dan is a proponent of Hybrid LCA and has been involved in the sector for some 3 years, during which he was key-note speaker at the UNFCCC Nigerian National Climate Change Conference Day, Abuja, Nigeria.

An experienced marketing executive and consultant to various blue-chip organisations, Dan also has a background of UK and international community / aid & development project co-ordination.

Dr. Gideon Middleton

— Head of Analytics

Gideon is Senior Lecturer in Business and Climate Change and Course Director for the MBA in Strategic Carbon Management with the University of East Anglia’s Business School. Prior, he worked as a Corporate Responsibility and Environmental Manager for a range of high profile companies, including Kingfisher (B&Q, Screwfix), Wincanton, Exel, DHL, Network Rail and Orange. Through his work Gideon has built up expertise in a diverse range of areas including:

  • carbon foot-printing
  • corporate responsibility reporting
  • climate change strategy
  • environmental management of logistics companies
  • corporate responsibility measurement and management systems.

Specifically, whilst at Orange he launched the first environmental report for a UK based mobile phone operator, the first recycling scheme for mobile phones and whilst at Kingfisher Gideon member of the CBI working group on carbon reporting.

Richard Sanders

— Associate Director

Former Director of Strategy for the John Lewis Partnership and former consultant for Bain and Co. Richard takes a strategic view of every business situation and works with clients to understand the relevance of CarbonRiver’s suite of services and how to maximise associated commercial benefits. With 10 years strategic consulting experience, Richard has a track record of generating profitable growth and delivering business turnarounds; his advice will improve your business and will ensure a return from your carbon related activities.

Keith Routledge

— Carbon & Energy Analytics

With over thirty years in the energy business, Keith is an experienced energy and carbon management professional.  In addition to covering supply, oil & gas processing and utilisation and consultancy he has, over the past eight years, led and delivered carbon management projects to some of the world’s leading organisations including Akzo Nobel, Pizza Hut, Wrigley and the UK National Health Service. He has also developed and delivered energy efficiency and awareness programmes for major corporate companies and developed and delivered training courses for the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI). In 2007 he spoke on the UK approach to carbon management at the international Energy Managers Exhibition at Portoroz, Slovenia. Having a first degree in Fuel & Energy Engineering and qualified as a chartered engineer (Member of the Energy Institute), Keith also holds an MBA and is a Carbon Trust Accredited Consultant.

Will Briston

— Head of Sales and Communications

Will has extensive sales, business development and communication experience having previously worked with The Partnership dealing with leading retailers and brands including Monsoon, Accessorize and Laura Ashley. Prior to this, Will was a director of one of the UK’s leading wine companies where he was instrumental in turning round the business and winning the UK distribution rights for a number of top wine brands driving turnover from £6 million to over £45 million. Whilst at United Biscuits, he launched/ relaunched mainstream FMCG brands including Mini Cheddars, Chocolate Hobnobs and Penguin and successfully ran UB’s business with J Sainsbury.

Harvey Jones

— Associate Director

Harvey has enjoyed an extensive, international career which has included senior/board/non exec director positions in a range of sectors including, ICT, psychometric test publishing, business consultancy and various aspects of web technology. His successful track record ranges from the creation of startup companies to working with major international organisations.

In 2007 Harvey co-founded Smartly Green which was created in response to prevailing research indicating that the bulk of the population wished to live more sustainably but were looking for guidance in how to do so. This was closely followed by the successful launch of a business to business division which provided consultancy on sustainability, CSR, staff engagement and Cleantech.

Christopher Bristow

— Associate Director

Chris has been involved with technology for over 30 years. After working for a major international bank and a large insurance company in London, he spent 25 years overseas designing systems and overseeing major technology upgrades for global corporations. He returned to London in 2007, when he co-founded Smartly Green.

Chris has also established a number of other start-ups, both for VCs, as well for companies breaking into new territories. He also has a successful M&A and fundraising record, and applied technological due diligence.

Chris’s real-world business experience and technological expertise means that he specialises in delivering lowered costs and increasing revenues to our clients through CarbonRiver’s range of consultative and technological solutions.

William Abraham

— Non-Executive Chairman

William has been a strong participant in Carbon and Emissions Markets for many years. He was former Head of the International Projects and Finance Group at Hammonds, a major international law firm based in the UK. In this capacity, he established the climate change practice group and headed the projects team for renewable energy projects. He has acted as advisor on major project financings, privatizations, and climate change related transactions including over 25,000MW of energy projects of all sorts. Most recently William has been advising several major European utilities on renewable energy projects – this included over 10,000 MW of projects under development and approx. 2,000 MW of completed projects. William is also a founding participant in the Renewable Energy Efficiency Partnership (REEEP). William has represented the governments of Belarus and Ukraine on a TACIS funded project involving their participation in the Kyoto Protocol and the EU ETS. He is also the Chairman of Conduit Alternative Energy Limited which is a company engaged in the early development of a number of projects in the Renewable Energy and Biofuels sector.

Diane Sanford

— Carbon Market/CDM legal counsel/expert

Diane is an experienced attorney and consultant assisting clients with structuring and negotiating transactions involving environmental commodities including carbon credit and REC development, sale, purchase, trading and brokerage and verification. She is the former Senior Counsel EcoSecurities Ltd., New York and Oxford, responsible for contracting to develop Verified Emission Reductions across the company’s 29 offices worldwide, mainly in the developing world. She has extensive carbon emissions/CDM cross-sectoral project experience in both international and domestic markets as well as experience in Asia, Africa, Europe and North and South America. She has advised on structuring carbon credit development, sale, purchase and monetization deals, as well strategic development agreements in Asia, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, North America and Central and Latin America. She has also served as legal counsel for CDM activities in Latin America, Central America and Spain and for a global methane capture and destruction joint venture.

Tirdad Sorooshian

— Head of CSR and Sustainability Transformation Services

Tirdad has long standing blue chip advisory experience and today can offer a unique team development approach in the area of Corporate Social Responsibility. Tirdad has a strong background in corporate transformation and change management. He is also expert in working with management teams and organisations to guide and develop attitudes, behaviours and plans towards sustainability solutions and goals. His recent clients include Consensus Business Group, Npower, Jumeriah Hotels Group, Electronic Ink Inc. Tirdad is the former NTL Head of Organisational Development and NTL board director, and is co-founder of Acclaria Accelerated Practice Systems UK.
